Wow, it's been a very long time since I've posted here. But we've got a show going up at Studio Q Gallery this week that is probably one of the most important exhibits we've ever hosted.
Studio Q is proud to present a show celebrating the life and art of a tremendously prolific Northwest surrealist painter, sculptor, poet, and more – whose career spanned more than four decades.
Remembering John Logan Harter Dec. 19, 1940 – May 2008
An exhibition of selected works
Curated by Ken Slusher of Open Mondays and courtesy of the estate of John Logan Harter
First Thursday Art Walk, Dec. 4, 2008, 6-10 p.m. Open House, Dec. 6-7, 2008, Noon-4 p.m.
Studio Q Gallery 619 Western Ave. (near Yesler in Pioneer Square) Fourth Floor North Seattle, WA 98104

"He's an artist who is not afraid of distorting reality, using enigmatic objects, and/or creating a visual vocabulary through the juxtaposition of objects within his work." – Duane Kirby Jensen, Everett Independent Voice, November 1999
"Harter has a theory that Northwest art is distinguished by a peculiar blend of realism, Asian influence, East Coast pop, West Coast funk, and folk art." – Lynn Basa, Bellevue Journal-American, Nov. 29, 1987
"John Harter's work would get a lot more attention if he were living in Chicago. He paints a kind of precisely delineated visual oddity that has no precedents here. The ground isn't the ground, the sky is a drop curtain and the roads tunnel off to nowhere. Harter's contribution to this show will offer many people a chance to catch up with one of Seattle's own first-class, latter-day Surrealists." – Regina Hackett, Seattle-Post intelligencer, Oct. 26, 1980
"There is an element of the absurd coupled with wit. ... the paintings and drawings are intimate explorations into a very subjective reality. There are oddities -- rendered in meticulous detail. The aesthetic seems as cleancut as a crewcut, but we know it isn't. It is a mockery of the crewcut syndrome." – R.M. Campbell, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, August (year unknown)
"Harter's flawless technique of acrylic on masonite creates fun studies which take a distorted view of the objects around us." – Mayumi Tsutakawa, Seattle Times, February (year unknown)

Please join us for our next art show, featuring guest artist MarkArt5.
First Thursday Art Walk June 5, 2008 6:30-10 p.m. 619 Western Ave. Fourth Floor North Seattle, WA 98104 Additional viewings available by appointment June 7-8, noon-4 p.m. Call: 206-390-0430 From the artist: MARK–given name ART – the process of creating put into final ends. 5 – Is a numeral representing the “Balance of Power”. When the scale of choice is even; two on one side and two on the other, the power force is the 5th element, the fifth man. This used in a name signifies the "power mover" of choice and therefore moving reality around by action causing change. |

Studio Q is proud to feature the thrilling work of artist Wyatt Landis during April's First Thursday Art Walk. Wyatt's large-scale, dramatically colored oil paintings feature compositions of women from the hyperreal aspect of beauty to abstract impressions of a nouveau Montmatre era. His work is sensual, darkly erotic, subtle, and overt. Live music by members of the brilliant psyche-classical EQlateral Ensemble will be played at the artist reception. This exhibit is held in conjunction with Mnemonic Gallery's SAKE event. |

Early this year, my Windows box exploded with nasty viruses and all I had to edit photos was a crappy version of Photoshop 5.0 on a very old and rickety HP laptop. Needless to say, I've been discouraged from editing photos and have fallen WAY behind on my TFP/CD projects. Almost every paid assignment I fulfilled this year was an arduous chore. Since 5.0 doesn't have a batch action feature for common conversion tasks as well as a bunch of other critical tools, I had to painstakingly convert and edit each individual image manually. I got pretty frustrated and churned out stuff I wasn't entirely happy with. I tried editing with a bunch of alternative photo software that I happened to have available. Nothing holds a candle to Photoshop for digital imaging. Argh. Well, this week a very generous angel gifted me with the entire Adobe CS2 Premium Suite, which I was able to install onto the sexy new MacBook that I acquired in July. Oh great lustful swells of hardware/software synergy!!! Dear Adobe angel, you know who you are -- and I am ever so grateful. Right in time for a corporate event shoot as well as a wedding that we're shooting this weekend! Whew! I am looking forward to getting caught up on my editing projects at last, now that I have the tools I need. Though my new day job continues to sometimes be a huge factor in sucking my very lifeblood dry, I hope my enthusiasm will give me energy. I did after all just return from Burning Man, which always gives my soul a fresh charge. With that, here is an image of velvetgarden from September 2005 that I just re-discovered: |
